The plucky hero is forced to leave her hometown when a minor incident in the great war brings devastation. Gathering up a rag-tag gang of misfits (and a lovable pet), she travels toward the center of the war – sometimes knowingly and sometimes by accident, suffering strange setbacks, always on the edge of the law.
Meanwhile, the ramrod-straight general of one of the huge alliances navigates political intrigue and interpersonal tensions to carry out a number of remarkable victories. What’s this? Is he showing emotion and even a little humor in unguarded moments? Perhaps he’s not as cold as he seems – could it be because of the long-ago loss he has never really forgotton?
Soon the hero’s endearing band of quirky expatriates, fighters, has-beens and criminals realizes that the cute but oddly mature little orphan girl they’ve been travelling with is more than she seems. Could it have anything to do with the ancient prophecy?
The general has heard an oddly similar prophecy having something to do with the secret of the ultimate weapon. But it seems the cruel and haughty opposing general, who is like and yet so very unlike him, is also on the trail! Scouts are dispatched!
The hero’s party is ambushed by the opposing general’s troops and separated. The hero makes her way toward the heart of the fighting as fast as possible without attracting any attention. But what’s this? The cute but oddly mature little orphan girl acts more and more strangely! She still needs protection, but she seems to know just what she’s doing! Yes indeed, she’s manifested the awesome secret! A light brighter than a thousand suns sweeps across the world and changes everything.
As the general drops off the hero’s gang – each of whom has played a vital part in the climax – back in her hometown to start a new life, he smiles a little ruefully.
The end.
